Dead Space for PC – Review & Top Tips

I know I am over 40 and shouldn't really be playing games anymore, but I have just finished this game and would like to give you my thoughts on the achievement that EA Games have accomplished.

Dead Space is a typical FPS (err that's First Person Shooter to non geeks) with a difference.  You run around this Giant Space Ship called the Ishimura blowing away the baddies with a various assortment of death wielding goodies.

What I did like about Dead Space was that you can't bring down the Necromorphs by blasting alone. Aim for the outer limbs or necks and chop'em off to bring'em down. This does takes a while to get the hang of it and the Keys for PC are not arranged that well. But you soon do get the hang of running (left shift) using your stasis (C key) while aiming (right mouse click).

Its all big budget stuff, big sets that are beautifully painted. The story is well conceived and the inevitable bosses (the really big baddies) at the end of levels are difficult to defeat.

The key with the game is to attack the baddies with precision shooting, to upgrade your weapons and suit as often as you can and learn to move and shoot. Isaac, the character you are occupying has a cool suit that allows him to walk into space and move in zero gravity.

You are accompanied in the story with a busty annoying woman called Kendra. She generally bosses you around and says "shit" a lot. Hammond is the man. He is a cool dude who doesn't trust Kendra and they do argue a lot (a bit like me and my ex wife).

So here are my top tips.

  1. Always have one power node in your inventory. You will find some doors that are locked that only open with Power Nodes. These rooms are filled with goodies and are always worth more than the 10,000 you paid for the node.
  2. Don't buy the flamethrower, Contact Beam or Force Gun. A total waste of time.
  3. Upgrade your rig for max hit points ASAP. Also your air supply to at least three nodes. You are gonna need it.
  4. Don't sell stuff you will need later as you sell at half the price you buy. Move it to storage instead.
  5. Sell all ammo for weapons you don't have, and stasis packs at the store and upgrade your suit to level 2 within 2-3 chapters. Forget about suit 3 and upgrade to suit 4 instead.
  6. Reload your weapons in lifts and have them aimed before the doors open.
  7. Use the CTRL key to find out where you are going.
  8. Avoid use of the CAPS LOCK key. You can only walk when this is on and you are gonna get wasted.
  9. The best gun is the Line Gun, followed by the Plasma Cutter, then Pulse rifle and finally the Ripper. The Ripper is especially effective at destroying the soft fleshy fishy like nasties that come out of some baddies and the spidery guys. You will know when you see them. The Ripper takes care of that lot very nicely thanks.
  10. Many of the big boss battles are multi stage. Typically they require you to attack vulnerable areas of the beastie's body usually denoted by yellow. Take you time and watch your aim. Don't blast indiscriminately and waste all your ammo.

Fabulous game and I enjoyed it a lot. Dead Space 2 - Isaac Revenge...oh I do hope so.

    Great review.

Arn't you rather old for kiddy games?

GTA is much more appropriate. The thrill of shooting someone in the head...I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

They would lock you up for saying shit like that in my state.
